Pancha Pakshi Shastram — An extremely simple technique that can be practiced without much knowledge of Astrology/Astronomy

Bharat has a very rich tradition of contributing methods like Jyotisha, Yoga etc. which enable humans to get in sync with the cycles of nature and thus lead life in harmony with it. These methods have originated both from Northern Bharat as well as from Southern Bharat. In the north, such texts are commonly called as “Samhita” (example: Bhrigu Samhita) and in the South, they are collectively called as “Nadi” (example: Agastya Nadi). Even if the methods used in both differ, the results always end up being the same with minute differences in the timings of the outcomes.

Today’s article will be based on one such technique from Southern Bharat that is rarely practiced, yet is extremely effective and easy to apply. This method is called the “Pancha Pakshi Shastram”. It originated in what is now present day Tamil Nadu. It was developed by two “Siddhars”. (Rishis are called Siddhars in Tamil) namely “ Bogar” and “Kaakabhujandar”. They believed that all humans are ruled by the 5 elements and found out the relationships between specific times and the corresponding element. Each element has been given the name of a bird and the time has been represented as the activity done by the bird.

As the name suggests, the Siddhars have divided people into 5 Birds, namely: Peacock, Vulture, Owl, Rooster, Crow. In this system, the day is divided into two parts i.e. Sunrise to Sunset and Sunset to Sunrise. During each half, each bird performs five activities, namely: Ruling, Eating, Walking, Sleeping, Dying.

The time for each of the activities is called “Yama” which is a cycle of 2 hours and 24 minutes. So there are 5 Yamas from Sunrise to Sunset and 5 from Sunset to Sunrise. Within each Yama, there are sub cycles which are unequally divided, which helps in being precise. The sub periods are divided as follows:

Day Time

Eating: 30 minutes; Walking:36 minutes; Ruling: 48 minutes; Sleeping: 18 minutes; Dying: 12 minutes (Totals to 2 hours and 24 minutes)

Night Time

Eating: 30 minutes; Ruling:24 minutes; Dying: 36 minutes; Walking: 30 minutes; Sleeping: 24 minutes (Totals to 2 hours and 24 minutes)

The beauty of this technique is that it condenses the complex astrological concepts like Muhurtas and Dashas into very user friendly tables that are custom made for each individual. The objective is to provide the user with good and bad times during the day. The only information that the user needs to have are 1. One’s Birth Nakshatra (Moon) 2. Whether birth was in the Krishna Paksha (Waning Half of the Moon) or the Shukla Paksha (Waxing Half of the Moon) and 3. The daily Sun Rise time for routine usage.

A one time effort is involved in finding out One’s natal bird. Once the bird is found based on the Janma Nakshatra and the Paksha (Waning/Waxing Moon), we can check what activities the bird goes through every day. As can be seen, the best time slots for every bird are the Ruling and Eating time. Walking is average. Sleeping is bad and Dying is the worst time period. All one has to do is to check what activity one’s bird is doing and try and schedule work as per the best and worst times.

The table below shows the natal bird for each nakshatra depending on which half the birth is in:

Of course, it is not possible to completely avoid malefic events in life, but using shastras like these, it is possible to try and lessen the impact as much as possible by being in harmony with the elemental cycle. Wherever possible, it can be used to leverage good times as well.

Apart from finding good and bad times, the system can be used for various other purposes like finding outcomes of an event, strength of an opposition, answering any question etc, naming of babies, naming of companies etc. Simply put, it is a complete astrological system in itself and a very simple one at that.

Examples:

  1. Indira Gandhi’s birth bird is Rooster as she was born in Shukla Paksha in Uttara Ashadha Nakshatra. On Wednesday, 31st October 1984, her birth bird was Sleeping between 8:24 to 10:48 am and Dying from 10:48 am according to the Pancha Pakshi Shastra, She was assassinated during this period.
  2. Rajiv Gandhi was born in Shukla Paksha in Poorva Phalguni Nakshatra. His Birth Bird is Owl. On May 21st 1991, his bird was passing through the Dying phase between 20:24 to 22:48 when he was assassinated.
  3. Amitabh Bachchan’s birth nakshatra is Swati and his birth was in the bright half. His native bird is Crow. On 26th July 1982, he suffered a near fatal accident in the sets of Coolie. The exact time of the accident is not known, however during the day the worst time was when his natal bird, Crow was in the Dying-Sleeping or Dying-Dying stage. The times for the same at Bengaluru were 11:28 to 11:41 and 13:41 to 13:54. The most interesting thing to note however is that, each bird is also connected with auspicious and inauspicious colours for the day. On that day, the inauspicious colour for him was Red which is obviously what he would have worn since he was shooting for the film “Coolie” in which he was playing the character (source: howisyourdaytoday website).
  4. This happened to me personally. I wanted to check whether this system really works or not. I was to leave for a 2 day trip by car. I decided to leave when my natal Bird was in the walking stage. Walking indicates obstacles and delays in the work. Everything seemed fine when I started. However, within 10 minutes, I had a flat tyre caused by a stray nail. It took about an hour for me to resume the journey again, exactly co-inciding with the time when the bird had moved from Walking to Eating.

The only software that I am aware of with correct calculations is “Parashara’s Light”. However, it is extremely expensive. A better option to learn completely about the system would be to buy the book titled “Biorhythms of Natal Moon: Mysteries of Pancha Pakshi” by Shri U.S.Pulippani. It has an extremely detailed explanation of the system along with all the daily tables which are pre-made. Thankfully, it is now back in print and is available on Amazon.

People who are interested in a simple, user friendly system of prediction can buy the book and learn more.
